Top Tips to Survive and Conquer Housing Fairs: How to Make the Most of Them

Housing fairs can feel overwhelming rows of booths, stacks of brochures, and dozens of landlords or accommodation providers all trying to get your attention. Whether you’re a first-year student looking for your first off-campus home or are turning student in search of something new, housing fairs are a fantastic opportunity to explore your options in one place. Here’s how to make the most of the experience and find a place you’ll love. Plus don't forget to keep an eye out for Studentpad at Housing Fairs!

1. Do Your Research Before You Go

Before you step foot in the fair, spend some time researching what’s available in your area. Know your budget, preferred location, and must-have features (like proximity to campus, utilities included, or furnished rooms). Having a checklist will help you filter through the options quickly and focus on what matters most. Studentpad has great map tools and an easy to use website to make your accommodation search easy!

2. Bring the Right Essentials

Pack a notebook or use your phone to take notes, especially when speaking with multiple landlords or housing reps. Bring a pen, a reusable bag for brochures, and copies of any relevant documents (like proof of student status preferences) in case you find a promising opportunity on the spot.

3. Ask Smart Questions

Don’t be shy—the fair is your chance to get insider details directly from landlords or letting agents. Good questions to ask include:

  • What’s included in the rent (utilities, internet, maintenance)?
  • How long is the lease term?
  • Are there any upfront fees or deposits?
  • What is the application process and timeline?

Taking notes on each conversation will help you compare your options later.

4. Be Wary of Deals That Seem Too Good to Be True

If a property sounds unbelievably cheap or convenient, dig deeper. Ask to see photos, reviews, or arrange a viewing before committing. Trust your instincts—legitimate landlords and agencies will have no problem answering your questions. All of the properties on the Studentpad Sites have been checked by the Universities and the team so there are no scams!

5. Network and Connect

Housing fairs are also great for networking. Chat with other students to hear about their experiences with certain properties or neighbourhoods. You might even find potential flatmates who share your housing goals or lifestyle preferences. Check out our soon to be improved Housemate Finder and Message boards across our sites making connecting with other students even easier!

6. Take Photos and Collect Contact Information

If you find properties you’re interested in, take photos of booth displays, flyers, or contact details. After the fair, it’s easy to forget which stand offered what, so visual reminders help keep things organised.

7. Compare Options After the Event

Once you’re home, review your notes and compare each option based on cost, location, amenities, and your personal priorities. Make a shortlist of your top choices and schedule viewings as soon as possible—the best spots go fast!

8. Stay Calm and Have Fun

Housing fairs can be busy and sometimes stressful, but remember they’re designed to help you. Take breaks if needed, grab some free goodies, and keep a positive attitude. Every conversation brings you one step closer to finding your ideal place.
